Join the celebration of the 200th anniversary in 2012 of Charles Dickens’s birth. England’s most famous and respected author was born on 7th February 1812 in Portsmouth before moving to London at the age of three.
Here you can see the eminent author with his writing desk, which he designed himself and which is now on display at the Dickens Museum, London, together with his writing chair. These beautifully-crafted miniatures faithfully recreate the details of the original pieces, including the pen tray and sloping writing tablet of the desk, and the intricate carving and raffia seat on the chair, right down to the brass castors!
Such is the following of Charles Dickens worldwide that his writing desk was sold in London in 2008 for a whopping £433,250. We can’t all have the real thing, but we can enter into the spirit of the celebrations with these miniature masterpieces.
Why not recreate a scene from Dickens? If you’d like to share your creation, email your photos and / or video, with “how to” details, before 30 March 2012. If your Dickens Display is shown on our website, there will be a treat for you (as well as worldwide acclaim, of course!).
