Miniature inspiration from a weekend away!
4 December 2013
Shelley Hemsley found inspiration in an unexpected place for her entry to the 2013 Creative Competition.
If you remember, this used The Cabin, our first small build with a wall-mounting option.
Here’s the result of her endeavours – scroll down to see how she got the idea!
Shelley, from Nottingham, says: “I bought the cabin kit to enter the creative competition and to be honest I was completely lost for an idea for a few weeks until my partner and I went away for an adventure filled weekend to Worcester.
“On the Saturday night we went out for a meal and whilst driving down the main road we saw three tied up horses on the side of the road, we thought it was a little odd but kept going.
“On our way back we saw two old fashioned gypsy caravans. There it was - my eureka moment, the gypsy caravan idea began.
“Creative juices began to flow and then to confirm it was fate, we were in a tearoom queuing to pay looking at greetings cards and the one that caught my eye was the one with two gypsy caravans at a camp.
“After returning home I realised I would have to alter the kit a lot but guess that’s the whole idea! So I got stuck in and apart from the horse brasses everything has been made, drawn and painted by myself… I have a new love for tacky glue!!
“A few of my favourite and most challenging parts of the caravan are the undercarriage and the roof.
“My beloved jigsaw and chisel work paid dividends on the undercarriage and my immense patience came in handy on the roof.
“With the rest of the project I have thoroughly enjoyed working out how to make the parts and seeing the finished article and most days I have ended up impressing myself.”
Wall-mounted dolls' house: introducing The Cabin
28 March 2013
is the first Dolls' House Emporium kit with a wall-mounting option.
With two simple wall brackets, this kit has a completely different feel from anything from our design team in the past, and offers a unique space saving option.
It also just happens to be the kit for this year's Creative Competition!
How will you decorate yours?
We've created a cliff-side lookout for the Harbour Master to protect his coastline from the upcoming storm ... and a secret resting place hidden in the undergrowth for fairies and magical creatures.
These are two of the styles we've experimented with so far. Why not see what you can think of - it could be a witch's keep, a cosy log cabin or even an ice cream stall!
Take the opportunity to create a scrap book of how your project takes shape - or video your build so that we can see how your idea came to life.
If you send us the details, you could win a big prize!
* 1st Prize - A Dolls House Emporium kit of your choice worth up to £650
* 2nd Prize - £350 of Dolls House Emporium vouchers
* 3rd Prize - £200 of Dolls House Emporium vouchers

Creative Competition 2013 - from The Dolls House Emporium
25 February 2013
It’s time to invite inspiration and imagination as The Dolls House Emporium reveals the project for this year’s Creative Competition.
- its first dolls' house with a wall-mounting option - offers endless possibilities with its characteristic circular windows, arched doorway and exposed rafters.
It’s an affordable small build and is this year supplied with brackets for wall-mounting, which could invite a multitude of amazing ideas. This kit has a completely different feel
from anything from our design team in the past, and offers a unique space saving option. Features include circular windows, an arched rooway and exposed rafters.
Of course, it's not just for entrants to the retailer's popular annuel contest, which offers up to £600 of kit to the entry judged most creative. Each year hundreds of dolls' house and miniature makers roll up their sleeves and get to work transforming it for sheer pleasure!
Judges are looking forward to seeing the entries, which are encouraged in the form of photos, video and writing.
To get the creative juices flowing designers at the Ripley HQ have created a cliff-side lookout for the Harbour Master to protect his coastline from the upcoming storm … and a secret resting place hidden in the undergrowth for fairies and magical creatures. Popular themes from previous years and different small projects include a witch’s keep, a cosy log cabin and even an ice cream stall.
The possibilities are endless but the raw materials are easy to come by!
