Look out for the dolls’ house furniture in ‘The Borrowers’

22 December 2011

On Boxing Day there's a new TV production of ‘The Borrowers’ - about tiny people who live under the floorboards of an old house.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the story, based on Mary Norton’s much loved children’s book, Pod, Homily and Arrietty live by borrowing things, like sewing needles and cotton reels, which they turn into tools and furntiture.

In the original book, their home under the floorboards has wallpaper made of old letters with the handwriting sideways to create vertical stripes, a chest of drawers made of matchboxes and postage stamps used as pictures on the walls.

When Arrietty befriends a normal sized boy - or "human bean", as the Borrowers describe big people - he brings them gifts of dolls’ house furniture to make their home more cosy.

Let’s hope the dolls’ house furniture makes an appearance in BBC’s updated version but we’ll just have to wait and see how much the new production differs from the original and quite wonderful book.

The Borrowers is on BBC1 on Bnxing Dat at 7.30pm.
